It is at times surprising, ecstatic and deeply nourishing

Many people practising yoga today are looking for ways to enrich their practice and find a more expressive approach to their yoga experience. Tabla yoga is the short-hand name for a facilitated yoga session with live musical accompaniment. Tabla are hand drums from Northern India that are revered for their melodic, rhythmic and textural qualities.

The sound of the tabla and other light percussion create a mood of quiet yet lively focus to engage in practice. Participants are guided through a series of yoga movements and postures and then led into a creative exploration of their own movements before being brought into stillness and silence for relaxation or meditation. The musical soundscape has the power to transform us from thinkers into expressive feeling beings, connecting to what our bodies need at a deeper level. Claudia Mangiamele is the inspiration for this class.
More about tabla player Sam Evans
After more than a decade of study in India, Sam is one of Australia’s most sought-after tabla players. A regular performer on national radio and at international music festivals, he runs a number of modern bands and lectures in Indian and World Music at Monash University.
